Women’s Health Education a Priority
| The Women’s Wellness Programme organised by Orongomai Marae and Upper Hutt City Council’s Community Services and Activation teams ran over the past ten weeks. Eighteen women participated, twice a week, on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, to learn about healthy homes and happy whanau, and develop support networks and friendships. Specialists in their respective areas were engaged to educate the group on a number of topics. Sessions included education on preventable health-related conditions and how to improve health and wellbeing of the women and their families, creating chemical-free cleaning and skincare products from household items and the nutritional requirements for the members of their household. They had a chance to cook and sample several healthy meals. The programme also had an exercise element with two gym visits, Zumba, Pilates, Hydrorobics and Aqua Jogging. For some, this was the first time that they had tried these activities. Finally, participants were given their own health checks with the opportunity to have blood pressure and hearing tested. On the completion of the ten weeks a ceremony was held followed by a healthy supper! A great way to wrap up what has been a very successful community project. The next Womens Wellness Programme will be running from Tuesday 17 July and finishing Thursday 20 September 2012. |
