In October 2016 the Upper Hutt City Council invited feedback from the retail community on the changes to the Shop Trading Hours Act that enables councils to create local policies to allow wider trading on Easter Sunday. The responses we received at that stage were mixed.
Further consultation with the wider public will be required to ensure sufficient opportunity for everyone likely to be affected by a policy to have their say. Upper Hutt City Council is not proposing to introduce a policy prior to Easter this year, given there is insufficient time to appropriately consult on the issue.
