This edition of Chatter celebrates one year in its online format and we in the Community Development Team hope you are finding the content useful for yourself and/or your community group. We are keen to hear feedback and any suggestions about how we can improve our service to you. We are keen to hear your thoughts too on whether or not you would be interested in having more networking events, workshops or following local community group information on Facebook. My contact details are below.
Young people and their wellbeing is a priority for the team and we are in the process of finalising this year’s Young Achievers Awards and are also involved in the youth leadership development programme, Spearhead Leaders. There are some incredible young people in Upper Hutt who are making a real difference in their community and are inspiring role models for other young people.
Look out too for a community Hackathon coming to Upper Hutt soon! It’s the community’s opportunity to come together over a weekend and share ideas about issues and solutions around youth wellbeing.
It’s also an important time of the year for acknowledging the contribution which local groups (usually run by dedicated volunteers) make to our community. One tangible way of acknowledging groups is to submit a nomination for a Community Award telling them about the great work the group does and how it is making a difference in the community. Last year Upper Hutt’s Community Rescue took out the Regional Award in the Health and Wellbeing category. Don’t be shy in putting your own group forward for the awards!
Council is also seeking nominations for the Civic Awards, to acknowledge those individuals who are, or who have made a significant voluntary contribution to Upper Hutt City. Last years recipients were Phil Grocott, a Victim Support Volunteer who works tirelessly with families affected by homicide, Doctor Barry Wards for his years of support for Forest and Bird and Wayne Myers for his work with the RSA and the Upper Hutt ANZAC Day services.

The Upper Hutt City Council is again seeking members of the Upper Hutt Community who have given outstanding service to the community.
Nominations for the 2017 Civic Awards are currently being called for and close on Friday, 30 June 2017.
Any person who has carried out outstanding voluntary service in Upper Hutt in the field of recreation, youth activities, social welfare, educational services, cultural or community affairs, or other is eligible for nomination.
This is a great opportunity for local residents to nominate individuals for formal recognition. There are many people out there in our City who work tirelessly for the benefit of others and we want to know about them and have the opportunity to thank them.
The Awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held later in the year.

Charity Services Free Webinars
Charity Services have launched their brand new Facebook page and it’s chock full of useful information. Follow them for regular updates and see below their schedule of exciting lunchtime webinars on a variety of topics:
Minimum Categories 25 May 2017, 12pm – 1pm
Under the new reporting standards for Tier 3 and Tier 4 charities, revenue/receipts and expenditure/payments must be reported according to certain minimum categories. In this webinar we will cover, the minimum categories and the rationale for each category and there will be a chance to ask questions at the completion of the session.
Performance Reports 22 June 2017, 12pm – 1pm
Things have changed! Under the new reporting standards if your charity is Tier 3 or Tier 4 you need to complete a Performance Report every year. In this webinar we’re going to explain what a performance report is, when you need to complete one and how it can help your registered charity.

The New Zealand Society of Translators and Interpreters (NZSTI) presents the book Treaty Times Thirty containing 30 translations of the Treaty of Waitangi to His Worship Mayor Wayne Guppy
NZSTI, on behalf of the organisers of the Treaty Times Thirty project will present a copy of the book to His Worship Mayor Wayne Guppy at a public event at the Upper Hutt Central Library on 11 May 2017 at 6pm.
One hundred and sixteen translators worked together on the translations of the English and Māori versions of the Treaty into 30 languages and New Zealand Sign Language. This is the result of a project conceived to celebrate the Society’s 30th anniversary.
‘The translations of the Treaty of Waitangi in the many languages of our country will add significantly to people’s understanding of New Zealand’s founding agreement’ said Treaty expert Dame Claudia Orange, a key supporter of the initiative. Project spokesperson Stefan Grand Meyer adds ‘the publication of the translations aims to make the Treaty more accessible to immigrants, and to encourage a better understanding of the Treaty internationally.’ As former Settlement Support Officer for the Upper Hutt City Council, Cecilia Titulaer said ‘The Upper Hutt City Council, led by Mayor Guppy has always been very supportive of the ethnic communities living in our city. I hope this book make them feel even more at home’.
The Treaty Times Thirty project also stresses the importance of translation in New Zealand, and highlights the translator’s difficult task of re-expressing identical meaning from one language to another. It also shows the importance of professional and accurate translations.

We are running our first Upper Hutt Community Emergency Hub (Civil Defence Centre) activation next Saturday 13th May 10 – 12pm at Silverstream School!
This is a chance for the community to come together to learn more about how they can be better prepared, to have a go at setting up a Community Emergency Hub and figure out how they could support one another in a disaster.

Local Upcoming Events
The workshop is FREE and designed to teach how to identify when someone is in cardiac arrest, how to perform chest compressions effectively and finally how to use an AED (defibrillator). This can apply to anyone, any where and any time.
These workshops run once a month and are hosted at Orongomai Marae, 5-7 Railway Avenue, Training Classroom.
