Active Communities
Active Communities is about creating opportunities for everyone in the community to be more physically active, whether it be through developing programmes, ‘have a go’ opportunities or the distribution of information about opportunities that already exist.Being active can sometimes be a struggle, Active Communities is about making physical activity easy and accessible by highlighting ways to be active throughout everyday life. Whether it is walking the children to school, going for a swim or a walk at lunch time, joining one of the many sports clubs in Upper Hutt or getting to grips with yoga or dance classes, the opportunities to be active in such a beautiful area are endless.
Active Communities assists the community to increase physical activity by:
- providing advice and monitoring information
- promoting accessible physical activity opportunities
- delivering key physical activity messages to promote healthy lifestyles
- assisting with community events and activities
Upper Hutt refugee and migrant residents
Calling all recent Upper Hutt refugee and migrant residents!
If you are new to Upper Hutt and would like to be a part of a tour of some of the recreation and leisure opportunities that this city has to offer then this programme is for you!
Activation, Settlement Support and Community Development teams from Upper Hutt City Council have come together to facilitate a bus tour of some of our iconic places and spaces which showcase the amazing built and natural environments this city offers.
“The idea has been successful in other places around the world such as Sydney,” says Mike Mercer, Schools and Youth Team Leader at Activation. “It’s a great way to expose our residents to what we have to offer, and remove that uncertainty about attending for the first time. To encourage new residents to get engaged with active and healthy opportunities in Upper Hutt is a win for all parties by increasing potential user numbers and breaking down barriers to participation.”
The tour will start at 9:00am and finish at 4:30pm on February 1 2012. The bus will depart from and return to H20 Xtream. It will include visiting a range of recreation and leisure sites in the city, provide information about programmes and projects that are occurring in Upper Hutt, and give people an introduction as to what is currently on offer.
Individuals and families are welcome and registration details will be coming shortly so keep an ear out for more information about this great opportunity.
If you have any questions please contact Mike Mercer or Cecelia Titulaer on mike.mercer@uhcc.govt.nz or Cecelia.titulaer@uhcc.govt.nz
