Rainfall monitoring
Greater Wellington Regional Council monitors rainfall at over 40 sites across the region. The information collected is vital for floodwarning, water management during drought, and detecting long-term trends in climate. The data are logged on a regular basis (usually every 5 or 15 minutes) and then uploaded to a database via telemetry (radio or cell phone transmission) every 2 to 3 hours. This is "raw data" because it has not yet been passed through GWRC checks. Once it has been checked it is moved to a secure archive and is referred to as 'archived data'.
The data provided via the GWRC website is a combination of archived and raw data. The archived data is shown in black and the raw data is shown in red. This ensures that the data provided is as accurate and up to date as possible. Should you require the information in a form other than how it is presented on the GWRC website, please contact GWRC as they can usually provide it to you within two working days.
Every month GWRC publish summaries of the information collected and other reports on rainfall to give a general picture of recent trends.
