Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) monitors rainfall at over 50 sites across the region

The information collected is vital for flood warning, water management during drought, and detecting long-term trends in climate. Every month GWRC publishes summaries of the information collected and other reports on rainfall to give a general picture of recent trends.

Data is collected at nine sites in Upper Hutt as follows:

  • Akatarawa (at cemetery)
    This site is located approximately 1km upstream from the confluence with the Hutt River and has been operating since March 1988. The river water level/flow and water temperature at this site are also measured.
  • Akatarawa Hills (at Warwicks)
    This site is located near the summit of the Akatarawa Hill Road and is on the boundary of the Akatarawa and Waikanae catchments. It has been operating since June 1980.
  • Upper Hutt (at Savage Park)
    This site is owned by Upper Hutt City Council and is maintained by Greater Wellington under contract. The site has been running since 12 July 2010.
  • Kaitoke (hutt at Kaitoke headworks)
    This site is located in the Kaitoke Regional Park and has been operating since January 1991.
  • Maymorn (Mangaroa at Maymorn pump station)
    This site is owned by Upper Hutt City Council and is maintained by Greater Wellington under contract.
  • Whitemans Valley (Mangaroa at Tasman Vaccine)
    This site is located at the top of the Mangaroa catchment and has been operating since July 1980.
  • Pakuratahi (at Centre Ridge)
    This site is located on the hillside above the Rimutaka Incline track and has been operating since April 1984.
  • Pinehaven (Pinehaven Stream at Pinehaven reservoir)
    This site is owned by Upper Hutt City Council and is maintained by Greater Wellington under contract.
  • Te Marua (Hutt at Te Marua)
    This site is located near the Te Marua water treatment plant and has been operating since July 1993. The water level/flow and water temperature are also measured at this site.
