Bridge Road update: Delays expected on Akatarawa Road 25th – 30th January while beams are lifted into place

beam lifted onto abutment

Motorists should expect delays of 5 to 20 minutes on 25, 26,27 and 28, 29 and 30 January on Akatarawa Road between Gemstone Drive and Gillespies Road.

Dependent on weather, it is proposed to erect a temporary bracing column, mid span between 25 – 30 January. The temporary support is required to provide lateral support to the beams to prevent buckling until they are braced together.

The beams are to be lifted into place from the Akatarawa Rd side of the site and will include lane closures. Akatarawa Rd residents have been advised. The beams weigh 32 tonnes each and the crane itself weights about 77 tonnes.

The abutments have been formed to the stage that they can accept the beams and some of the supporting precast deck slabs have been cast off site. This is a significant mile stone in constructing the new bridge and completion is expected by the end of February 2017.

The first set of beams arrived on Thursday 26 January and were assembled on site by contractor, Brian Perry Civil. The first beam was successfully lifted and placed onto the abutments around 8.00pm on Friday 27 January.

The lifting of the second beam was scheduled to be completed on Friday 27 January however, this was delayed when the crane experienced technical difficulties and work was re-scheduled to continue on Monday 30 January. The beam will now be lifted into place after 1.00pm on Monday 30 January and the bracing of both beams will then be completed. Traffic signals remain in place to manage single lane traffic flows.
