Akatarawa Road closed due to slip

3:00 pm update

Contractors are allowing vehicles through the site on a sporadic basis while clearing continues. There are more slips beyond the initial site but the road is currently passable through to Waikanae. Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution.

We’re expecting to have the slip cleared  completely by 6.00 pm.

2:00 pm update

Contractors will be able to begin clearing the slip once the trees that have come down have been removed and the damage to the electrical network has been made safe.

We still have no estimate as to when a single lane can be cleared and no information on nature of road beyond this initial blockage.

11:45 update

We’re expecting power to be restored in 2 hours.

The slip itself is estimated at 100 m3 (cubic metres) or more. We have no estimated time yet as to when it will be cleared.

09:18

Akatarawa Road is closed near the saw mill.

Trees and a slip have taken out power lines. Contractors will be on site this morning.

There has also been a slip on Mangaroa Valley Road. The road remains open and motorists are asked to take care while contractors work to clear the slip. Updates will be posted on our website.

We will provide further details as they become available.
