California Park is located toward the North-eastern end of the suburb of Totara Park. It can be accessed from Larchmont Grove, California Drive, Galveston Grove, and the Hutt River Trail. The park’s amenities include a playground, tennis rebound wall, and wide open spaces. Similar to neighbouring Harcourt Park (across the river) a feature of California Park is the Wellington Fault crush zone. Access to Harcourt Park is via the nearby Norbert Street footbridge.

California Park – Repurposing the Scout Hall Update 03/03/2019

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the California Park – Repurposing the Scout Hall online survey which was open from February 20, 2019 to March 11, 2019.

There were 78 responses to the online survey. The majority of respondents live in Totara Park and support the proposal for Upper Hutt City Council to grant a lease of bare land at California Park to the Upper Hutt Municipal Brass Band.

Council staff recently met with the band to discuss the survey results and next steps. A lease of bare land is being prepared, and the band is excited to be moving into a larger building and getting to know their new neighbourhood.

The band has taken ownership of the building formerly owned by Scouts New Zealand and will spend the next few weeks transforming it from a Scout Hall into a fit for purpose band room. Initial plans to enhance the space include acoustic dampening and a good clean and tidy!

The band hope to begin regular weekly band lessons and rehearsals at their new site from June/July this year.

The band is keen to welcome new members and meet their neighbours. If you want to keep up to date with band news you can follow them on Facebook @UHBrass or learn more about their history and membership at their website HERE
